Many of us were taught that Jonah ran from God because he was afraid of the Assyrians. But in Jonah chapter 4, Jonah tells us the real reason in his own words, and it has nothing to do with fear. From the docks of Joppa to the belly of the great fish, from a ship full of pagan sailors who showed more compassion than the prophet to a five-word sermon that turned the most feared city in the ancient world upside down... the clues are there from the very first chapter.
This isn't a story about courage. In Hebrew, the same word — ra'ah, "evil" or "disaster" — describes Nineveh's wickedness, the judgment God chose not to send, and how God's mercy felt to Jonah. And when Jonah finally explains himself, he quotes the very words God spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai: "gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness." Jonah didn't run because he thought God would destroy Nineveh. He ran because he was afraid God wouldn't.
In this video, we walk through all four chapters of Jonah — in the original Hebrew, not just the English translation — and trace how this short book connects to the older brother in the parable of the prodigal son, the "sign of Jonah," and the One Jesus called "a greater than Jonah." And we look at why the book ends with a question that God is still asking today.
