Late Afternoon Cycle Around Maryland Roads & Trails Come along for another relaxing ride through Maryland neighborhoods, peaceful bike paths, wooded trails, quiet backroads, and, of course, another visit to the ever-unpredictable haunted golf course. No racing, no training plans, and no pressure to chase personal records. Just a bicycle, a warm late-afternoon ride, some relaxing nature sounds, and Maryland weather immediately reminding us not to get too comfortable with fall just yet. One of my favorite parts of documenting the same roads and trails throughout the year is seeing just how dramatically they can change depending on the weather, season, and even the time of day. After enjoying the coolest evening of the year on the last ride, I had to head out a little earlier today — and apparently traveled directly back into summer. With the sun still higher in the sky, the temperature felt considerably warmer than it has during our recent evening rides. The cooler fall air we’ve been getting after sunset was nowhere to be found, and the combination of direct sunlight and warmer temperatures made the exact same route feel noticeably more difficult. There were plenty of cars moving through the neighborhoods and backroads, along with pedestrians taking advantage of the afternoon weather. Some of the quieter bike paths were busier than they’ve been during our later rides, so there was plenty of slowing down, maneuvering around people, watching intersections, and waiting for safe openings. The different time of day also completely changed the look of the route. Instead of chasing the last few minutes of daylight into dusk, everything was still bright and fully illuminated. The woods had stronger patches of sunlight breaking through the trees, the lakes reflected a brighter sky, and the neighborhoods felt much more active. It’s interesting how simply moving the ride a little earlier can make roads and trails we’ve seen dozens of times feel surprisingly different. And yes, before the gear experts arrive in the comments, I am fully aware that I don’t shift nearly as often as I probably should. My strategy remains simple: put the bike in a difficult gear and see who gives up first, me or the drivetrain. After experiencing the coolest ride of the year and then immediately returning to the heat, I think the drivetrain is currently handling the seasonal transition better than I am.
