Autumn Sunlight Through the Trees of Marylands Trails Come along for another relaxing ride through Maryland neighborhoods, peaceful bike paths, wooded trails, quiet backroads, and, of course, another visit to the ever-unpredictable haunted golf course. No racing, no training plans, and no pressure to chase personal records. Just a bicycle, beautiful autumn sunshine, cool fall air, some relaxing nature sounds, and a drivetrain that has apparently decided we’ve pushed this experiment far enough. One of my favorite parts of documenting the same roads and trails throughout the year is seeing just how dramatically they can change depending on the weather, season, and even the time of day. Tonight might have brought the best conditions we’ve had yet: cool temperatures, bright sunshine, low humidity, and that perfect early-autumn light filtering through the trees. After months of heat, humidity, thunderstorms, wind, and Maryland weather generally refusing to cooperate, evenings like this make all of those summer rides worth it. The temperature was cool without being cold, the sunshine still had plenty of warmth, and the entire route felt easier. If I could choose cycling weather and permanently lock the settings, this would probably be it. The autumn sunlight was especially beautiful through the wooded sections. As the sun dropped lower, beams of warm light worked their way through the trees, creating long shadows across the trails and highlighting the first hints of changing leaves. There’s still plenty of green out there, but the landscape is slowly beginning its transition into full fall color. We also had another extremely important development in the ongoing investigation of the haunted golf course. The mysterious groundskeeper has returned. Once again, I spotted someone tending to the overgrown oasis that apparently still identifies as a golf course. Throughout this series we’ve watched portions of the property get mysteriously mowed, weeds sprayed, fallen trees removed, and various sections maintained just enough to convince me that someone, somewhere, still has a plan for this place. I have absolutely no idea what he hopes to accomplish. But at this point, I’m fully invested and support the cause. Unfortunately, while the golf course appears to be receiving ongoing maintenance, my bicycle has not been quite as fortunate. Toward the end of tonight’s ride, the chain started skipping. The drivetrain has been squeaking, creaking, clicking, whining, and generally communicating its displeasure for quite a while now, so this probably shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all the miles we’ve put on it, combined with my highly sophisticated strategy of selecting a difficult gear and then rarely changing it, I think we’re finally approaching the end.
