In the early 1800s, Philadelphia faced a growing crisis. Its population was booming, drinking water was often drawn from wells threatened by nearby privies and cesspools, and devastating yellow fever epidemics had exposed the city's public health vulnerabilities.
Philadelphia needed a reliable public water supply.
The city's first solution, designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, relied on massive steam engines to pump water from the Schuylkill River. But the system was expensive and difficult to maintain.
Then came Frederick Graff and the Fairmount Water Works.
Beginning with steam-powered pumps in 1815, Fairmount evolved into one of the most remarkable engineering achievements of early America. By harnessing the power of the Schuylkill River, engineers created a water-pumping system that would serve Philadelphia for generations while becoming one of the city's most celebrated landmarks.
Join Built to Last as we explore the engineering, ingenuity, and remarkable history of Philadelphia's Fairmount Water Works — a place where necessity inspired innovation, and infrastructure became a source of civic pride.
