This walk ends at the Rakaia River Mouth as it enters the Canterbury Bight (South Pacific Ocean).
The seal appears to be the New Zealand fur seal (kekeno). This is the primary seal species that regularly feeds, rests and hauls out at mainland river mouths like the Rakaia River.
The gravel barrier was eroding as I filmed which caught me by surprise. This barrier is made of mixed sand, gravel and shingle. It separates the freshwater lagoon from the open Pacific Ocean. Filmed 14 August 2026. Enjoy.

The Rakaia Huts Reserve is a quiet, self-contained freedom camping area located on the south bank of the Rakaia River mouth in Canterbury. Managed by the Ashburton District Council, it offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience primarily suited for fishing enthusiasts, whitebaiters and self-contained travellers.
