In 2015, a violent clash over a land dispute in Dangawas village near Merta, Rajasthan, left 5 Dalits and 1 non-Dalit dead in what came to be known as the Dangawas Massacre. The dispute traced back to a mortgaged piece of land between Chimanaram Jat and a Dalit family led by Ratnaram Meghwal, complicated further by the Rajasthan Tenancy Act of 1955, which restricts the sale of Dalit-owned land to non-Dalits. Tensions escalated on 14th May 2015 when both sides clashed violently, resulting in six deaths, including that of a local priest. Despite a CBI investigation and a case involving 82 witnesses, the special SC/ST court eventually acquitted all 40 accused, citing insufficient evidence and hostile witnesses who failed to identify the attackers.
