The Entire History of Iraq: From Mesopotamia to Modern Iraq

Iraq is home to one of the oldest and most influential civilizations in human history. From the ancient land of Mesopotamia, where the world's first cities and writing systems emerged, to the rise and fall of powerful empires, the story of Iraq spans thousands of years. In this documentary, we travel through the complete history of Iraq — from ancient Sumer, Akkad, Babylon and Assyria to the Persian empires, Alexander the Great, the Parthians and Sasanians. We then explore the Arab conquest, the rise of Islam, the Abbasid Caliphate and the golden age of Baghdad, followed by the Mongol destruction of Baghdad, Ottoman and Safavid rule, and the creation of modern Iraq. The story continues through the 20th century, the formation of the Iraqi state, Saddam Hussein's era, the Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, the 2003 Iraq War, and the turbulent years that followed, including the rise of ISIS and Iraq's struggle toward stability. This is the story of a land that has witnessed the birth of cities, writing, kingdoms, empires, religions, wars and civilizations — a land whose history helped shape the world.
