On the first day after giving birth, an exhausted golden lion tamarin mother finally closes her eyes to rest while her newborn stays close beside her.
But the baby quickly becomes the center of attention.
Two other golden lion tamarins approach, gently inspect the newborn, and begin carrying it while the mother rests. What may look surprising is part of the complex social life of these small primates, where other group members can help care for and transport young infants.
As the day continues, the newborn begins discovering life in the rainforest — clinging to adults, watching the canopy, learning to move across branches, tasting new foods, and slowly becoming more independent.
Why do other tamarins become so interested in a newborn? How does shared care help an exhausted mother recover? And how quickly can a tiny infant begin learning to survive high in the forest canopy?
Follow the first stage of this young tamarin’s journey from complete dependence toward its earliest steps of independence.
