#Psalm49 [VERSE 1] Hear this, all you peoples, listen, all who live a little while, low born and high born, rich and poor together. My mouth will speak wisdom, the murmur of my heart, understanding. I turn my own ear to the proverb, I open my riddle on the harp. [VERSE 2] Why should I fear in the days of evil, when the guilt at my heels closes around me? Those who trust in their wealth, who boast in the mass of their riches: no one can ransom a brother, no one can pay God the price their life owes. And the ransom of their soul is worth more than they have, and nothing they pay will ever let them live on for all time and never see the grave. [VERSE 3] For they see this: the wise die, the fool and the brute perish together, and their wealth is left to others. Yet in their gut: their houses continue forever, their dwellings last generation after generation. They even call their own names over the ground. [CHORUS] And mortals, no matter their worth, do not last the night. They are made like the beasts, silenced, then gone. [VERSE 4] This is their way, their confidence and folly, and their heirs are pleased, their mouths say the same. Like sheep they are set for Sheol. Death shepherds them. The upright have dominion over them at morning, and their bodies are for Sheol to wear away, far from their palaces. [BRIDGE] But God will ransom my soul from the hand of Sheol, for He will take me instead. [VERSE 5] Do not fear the man who grows rich, when the glory of his house increases. For at his death he takes nothing, his glory does not descend after him. Though he blessed his own soul while he lived, and they praise you when you do well for yourself - he too will join the generation of his fathers. For all time they will not see light. [FINAL CHORUS] Mortals, no matter their worth, do not understand. They are made like the beasts, silenced, then gone. © 2026 Come Follow Hymn Project. All rights reserved. Inspired by Scripture.
