How did magic in Dungeons & Dragons develop from the battlefield Wizards of Chainmail to the flexible spellcasters of 5th Edition? In this episode of From Chainmail to 5th Edition: The Evolution of Dungeons & Dragons, I follow that remarkable journey through Original D&D, AD&D, Second, Third and Fourth Editions, and into the modern game. Early Magic-Users were fragile characters who might enter a dungeon with only one precious spell. Magic was scarce, unpredictable and sometimes genuinely dangerous. Today’s spellcasters have cantrips, flexible spell slots and far more opportunities to use their powers. Has that made magic better—or has something mysterious been lost along the way? Which edition handled magic best? Please share your memories and opinions in the comments. #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #Chainmail #OldSchoolDnD #DnDHistory
