How a turbo turns exhaust energy into boost, and why it is the last part to condemn. Turbine (hot side) drives compressor (cold side); a wastegate or VGT vanes control boost on the exhaust side.
Gas path from filter to cat/DPF; a pre-turbo exhaust leak or restriction starves the turbine
Light load hides a boost deficit; under load P0299 sets; a wastegate stuck shut sets P0234
Flutter (recirc valve), VGT soot sticking, diesel EGR stuck open
Desired vs actual boost in kPa abs; gauge = absolute − BARO
Regulated charge-air leak test, engine off, never above normal boost in gauge pressure
Oil past the turbo seals usually traces to a restricted drain or high crankcase pressure; rule out engine oil burning (rings, valve seals, PCV) first. Garrett attributes more than 90 % of turbo failures to oil supply or contamination.
HEV: road test in normal mode; maintenance mode for static checks only; HV work per OEM, trained personnel only
Full P0299 test tree: see our P0299 underboost video.
Values and thresholds vary by OEM and calibration; P0299 figures are from one Saab/GM 9-4X example. Verify against OEM service information. The 3D model is a generic illustration.
What you'll see:
• Air In, Exhaust Out: Turbine (hot side), Compressor wheel, Common shaft, Exhaust leak/restriction
• Boost Control: WG vs VGT: Wastegate valve, Wastegate actuator, VGT vanes (mostly diesel)
• Desired vs Actual Boost: Boost pressure sensor, Wastegate actuator, Gauge vs absolute, HEV engine run
• Low vs High Load: Wastegate stuck open/shut, Sooted VGT vanes, EGR stuck open (diesel), Flutter on throttle lift
• Charge-Air Leak Test: Boost leak, Boots and clamps, Recirc / bypass valve, Test pressure
• Condemn the Turbo Last: Compressor wheel, Shaft play, Oily pipes / blue smoke, Turbine housing
