Giving Man of Steel a Second Chance

Following our two recent videos on Alfred Hitchcock’s I Confess and Ralph Nelson’s Lilies of the Field, we’re eagerly and lovingly handing over to you a new one that doesn’t simply invite you to watch a new movie, but asks you — if you have seen this film before — to give it a second chance. Our new video essay comes to us in the form of a sharp retrospective and a critique on modern pop culture by asking you to revisit Zack Snyder’s misunderstood iteration of Superman in his 2013 feature, Man of Steel. After all the stratospheric hubbub and gushing eyes surrounding James Gunn’s latest reboot of the Big Blue Boy Scout from 2025, we invite audiences to rediscover through a nuanced lens the heart, mind, and soul of a popular DC Comics superhero and a lost opportunity to ponder over this version. The famed director has brought to the silver screen films such as 300 and Watchmen. But his grandiose Justice League from 2021 proved to be a second chance at giving viewers and new fans alike a look at the reverence, myth, and wonder missing from not just Joss Whedon’s hackneyed theatrical version in 2017, but the progressively plasticized pop culture; elements of which continue to dissipate as filmmaking continues. So please, we ask all of you to come along for the ride, and give Man of Steel a second chance.
