Nepal Flood: 1,355 Dead. Then they sent Everest's guides into the tunnels.

On 26 August 2026, part of the Langtang Lirung glacier came down. The debris dammed a Himalayan river, then let it go. Within minutes the flood was in the Trishuli valley, and it filled the tunnels of Nepal's hydropower plants with water, rock and mud. Two days later Nepal's government did something it had never needed to do before. It authorised the country's certified mountain guides — IFMGA-qualified professionals, the men most of the world still calls porters — to work as a technical rescue force. Not on a mountain. Inside a collapsed power station. This is what happened on 26 August, why Nepal's ordinary emergency services could not reach the people who needed them, how guides ended up being the ones sent in, what they actually found a hundred and twenty metres down that tunnel, and who made the rescues that followed.
