Prepare for a classic space battle on the Atari 2600 with Spacechase, a fast-paced fixed shooter originally released in 1982 by Games by Apollo.
In Spacechase, you take control of a powerful Starcruiser positioned in orbit around an unnamed moon. Alien raiders are attacking from above, and your mission is to destroy their formations before they overwhelm you. The lunar surface rotates in the background, creating an impressive sense of movement while remaining purely visual and having no direct effect on the gameplay.
Your Starcruiser can move in eight directions within the lower portion of the screen, giving you plenty of room to maneuver while dodging incoming attacks and lining up your shots. As the game progresses, the alien forces become increasingly dangerous, eventually introducing Lazer-Directed Heat-Seeking Proton Missiles that make survival much more difficult.
Spacechase also supports both single-player and two-player gameplay. In two-player mode, players take turns competing for the highest score. The Atari's Difficulty Switch can also be used to adjust the challenge, with the A position making the player's shots slower than the B position.
Designed by Ed Salvo, Spacechase became Games by Apollo's best-selling title, making it a particularly interesting game in the company's short history. Apollo even offered customized and "monogrammed" versions of the game, with only a very small number being produced.
This gameplay video takes a look back at Spacechase on the Atari 2600, showcasing its classic space combat, alien formations, directional movement, projectile attacks, and increasingly difficult enemy assaults.
