Prepare to defend your spaceship on a mysterious alien world in Space Cavern, a fast-paced fixed shooter released for the Atari 2600 in 1982 by Games by Apollo.
In this retro space adventure, you take control of the commander of an intergalactic spaceship that has landed on a previously unknown planet. The world is inhabited by dangerous creatures known as Electrosauri and Marsupods, and they are determined to attack your ship's crew. Your mission is to survive the assault by destroying the creatures before they can reach you.
The action takes place with your character positioned near the bottom of the screen. Movement is controlled with the joystick, allowing you to move from side to side while using different joystick directions to fire in different directions. Pressing the controller button fires upward, giving you several ways to defend yourself against enemies approaching from above and below.
The creatures are armed with beams of their own, so staying alert is essential. Any successful hit causes you to lose a life. Destroying enemies earns points, with Electrosauri worth either 115 or 165 points depending on the enemy, while Marsupods are worth 200 points. Reaching 2,000 points awards an extra life, giving you another chance to continue the battle.
One of the interesting features of Space Cavern is the number of gameplay options available. The game contains 24 different variations, playable by either one or two players. These variations can change the number of enemies, their speed, the direction of their lasers, and whether Marsupods appear. The variations are selected by using the Atari 2600's difficulty switches.
Space Cavern was designed by Dan Oliver and released by Games by Apollo on August 25, 1982. The game was inspired by the success of Demon Attack, after Apollo founder Pat Roper became interested in creating a similar style of experience. A version of the game was later rereleased under the name Space Canyon, while a planned Atari 5200 port was started but never completed.
This video features Space Cavern gameplay on the Atari 2600, showcasing its unusual control system, waves of alien creatures, directional firing, score-based extra lives, and several elements that make it an interesting part of the early Atari 2600 library.
