Topic: Introducing the I′-chart: an improved I-chart for SPC in healthcare
With Jacob Anhøj and Dr Nathan Proudlove, University of Manchester
This Huddle is for analysts and improvement colleagues who already use Statistical Process Control (SPC) - and those who would simply like to understand more about it.
We’ll start with a brief introduction to SPC before exploring the newly developed I′-chart (I-prime chart), designed to address some of the limitations of the traditional I-chart, particularly where denominators vary.
Using real health and care examples, Jacob will compare the I′-chart with established SPC approaches and discuss when it may be useful, while Nathan will reflect on the method from an improvement and implementation perspective, including some of the practical issues around software and analytical capability.
We’ll also explore interest in developing an SPC community of practice for health and care, where analysts can share methods, tools, software and learning.
The session connects particularly strongly to supporting change and improvement and building analytical capability. Being able to distinguish meaningful change from routine variation is fundamental to using data well and supporting better decisions.
