How safe is the food Nigerians eat every day? From the farms where our food is grown to the markets where it is sold, dangerous practices involving pesticides, chemical preservatives, food processing and storage are raising serious concerns about food safety in Nigeria. The threat of food contamination is not something Nigerians can afford to ignore. The consequences for public health could be devastating. Where are NAFDAC, SON and other relevant government regulatory agencies? The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), and other responsible authorities must strengthen food safety monitoring, enforce existing regulations and protect Nigerians from harmful food products. Food safety is not a luxury. It is a matter of life and death! Nigeria cannot afford to treat this growing concern with indifference.
