This year's Nobel Prize in Physics has been announced! 🏆
Congratulations to Francis Halzen, the mastermind behind the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, on winning the award!
But what exactly are "neutrinos"? Why would scientists go through the immense trouble of traveling to the freezing Antarctic and drilling two-kilometer-deep holes in the ice, just to catch these nearly massless "ghost particles"?
In this video, we'll take you on a journey starting from failed deep-sea
exploration projects, all the way to the "Cherenkov blue light" beneath the Antarctic ice. Let's see how IceCube not only helps us find the jets of active galactic nuclei (supermassive black holes) but also serves as the ultimate laboratory for hunting dark matter and even testing theories of quantum gravity!
After watching, don't forget to tell me in the comments: What do you think the next Nobel Prize-winning breakthrough for neutrinos will be? 👇 If you enjoy our content, remember to hit like, subscribe to 【h bar】, and turn on the notification bell so we can chat about physics the easy way!
