East and northeast is one of the most scenic regions of the country, stretching along the south coast from just beyond Reykjavík toward the glaciers and black‑sand beaches near Vík and beyond. It combines dramatic volcanic landscapes, fertile farmlands, and easy access to glaciers and highlands, making it a compact area with a lot to see. Key sights include some of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk behind the falling water, and Skógafoss, a powerful curtain of water with hiking trails leading up the river. Near Vík, the Reynisfjara black sand beach offers basalt sea stacks, roaring Atlantic waves, and striking coastal views, while nearby cliffs host nesting seabirds in summer. Further east, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach (Southeast Iceland), with floating icebergs and ice fragments scattered on black sand. We stayed about half an hour before the town of Vík, where we began our 4th day in Iceland. Setting off early, we drove to our destination, Djúpivogur, a small but beautiful town in eastern Iceland, where we spent the night and did some short hikes the following day. Along the way, we visited many of Iceland’s sights and natural wonders featured in this short video. It was both our longest drive and the longest day of our trip.
