In March 2025 we started on our quest to run a marathon in each of the 50 states with the Asheville Marathon. It was our 2nd street marathon and 3rd marathon overall in the 2nd state. This movie kicks off a series attempting to record at least one marathon in each of the 50 states. Asheville was very special to us. We registered just a few weeks before hurricane Helene hit North Carolina and the city of Asheville. When we heard the news about the devastation resulting from Helene, we were sure the event would be canceled. But in a great effort by the city of Asheville and the organizers the impossible became possible and just about 5 month after the tragic events runner from all over the US met in Asheville to celebrate the resilience of a region, city, and the people. We were happy to be a part of this group of runners and dedicate this movie to the great people of Asheville and thank them for their dedication and hard work to make this event a reality. So if you watch this, keep in mind how much effort was necessary to get the city to where it caould hold an event like this marathon safely. While in Asheville we stayed at the Wrong Way River Lodge and Campground (https://www.wrongwaycampground.com/)*. It's a great place at the French Broad river, with direct access to the French Broad River Greenway, a system of path ways ideal for runners and part of the marathon course (as you will see it was a blessing for Lutz). It is also close to the River Arts District (about 1 mile) with lots of breweries and restaurants. As you will see, in 2025 the course was impacted by Helene and will most likely change in the future. If you use this video to prepare for you own Asheville experience, you still can use large parts of the course to get ready. For us it was a tough race. We came to Asheville without any significant training due to the impact of an extent period of illness and were actually not sure if we would even finish the full distance. In the end the time was not great (at least for Lutz), but we fought through the pain (even if some coursing was needed 😂 ) and finished the full marathon. Since the marathon in 2025, we have returned several times and have seen first hand how the city has come back more and more from the devastation of Helene. If you participate in the 2026 Asheville Marathon, you might not even notice anything and we hope you have as much fun as we had in 2025.
