A new pipe spool aligns neatly with a pump when cold. After the system heats, the coupling alignment changes and a support lifts away from its bearing surface. The pipe has not become mysteriously heavier; thermal movement is finding a path through the equipment. Predict why adding a thicker pipe wall might fail to solve this problem. We will examine piping as a pressure boundary, a flow passage and a mechanical structure at the same time. Material, wall thickness, joints, flexibility and support layout must work together. A component that is strong enough for internal pressure can still overload a nozzle through restrained expansion.
Moving diagrams, worked examples and separate practice answers for Third Class learners.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
• Distinguish the roles of CSA, ASME, ANSI and ASTM and identify the applicable power-piping or process-piping code scope.
• Describe welded and seamless pipe manufacture, nominal sizes, wall designations, ratings and ferrous material applications.
• Use a documented design basis and material data to calculate required pipe wall and select a suitable listed size.
• Relate common non-ferrous piping alloys to their applications, compatibility and applicable material specifications.
• Compare threaded, welded and flanged connections and identify their associated fittings and assembly considerations.
• Explain gasket construction, material selection and unconfined, semi-confined and confined flange geometries.
• Describe thermoplastic, thermoset, flexible and concrete piping and evaluate service suitability from approved product data.
• Calculate thermal length change and explain the forces and equipment damage created by restrained movement.
• Explain how simple and offset expansion bends accommodate movement and where their flexibility is useful.
• Compare slip, corrugated, bellows, hinged, universal, pressure-balanced and externally pressurized joints and their maintenance needs.
• Distinguish the load-carrying and movement-control functions of hangers, rollers, springs, constant supports, anchors and guides.
