What happens inside a massive star in the final second before it explodes? From the outside, nothing. The surface looks calm. The light is steady. But deep inside, the iron core has already begun a collapse so violent it will be over before the star's surface even knows it started.
In this video, we trace the entire journey — from millions of years of nuclear fusion building heavier and heavier elements, to the moment iron accumulates and fusion can no longer save the star. We explain how electron capture and photodisintegration shatter the core's last line of defense in a runaway catastrophe lasting less than a third of a second. We follow the inner core as it plummets to nuclear density and rebounds in a dramatic core bounce, launching a shock wave that stalls almost immediately. And we explore how neutrino heating, convection, and turbulent instabilities may revive that shock and finally tear the star apart — or fail, leaving behind a black hole in silence.
This is the hidden physics behind every core-collapse supernova. The most violent second in the universe, invisible to every telescope, detectable only through neutrinos and gravitational waves before any light escapes.
