Holiday crowds fill the city's most famous shopping street as the neon lights come alive after dark. Everything changed after the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 opened Shanghai as a treaty port. Foreign concessions soon followed, and by the 1930s the city had become Asia's leading financial hub with roughly 3 million residents. The real turning point came in 1990, when the central government approved the development of Pudong, east of the Huangpu River. Within a generation, former farmland became one of the world's best-known financial districts. Today the city covers about 6,341 square kilometers and is home to roughly 24.9 million residents.
