💬 Do you always say “Of course!” when someone asks you for help—even when you are already busy? Learn how to say no politely in English with Emma and Daniel in this A2–B1 English learning podcast about making plans, setting boundaries, and keeping your promises.
Daniel wants to be a helpful friend, coworker, neighbor, and brother. But he has promised four people his Saturday afternoon! His friend needs help moving, his coworker wants feedback on a presentation, his neighbor is expecting him to wait for a delivery, and his sister is preparing a family lunch. Daniel said yes to everyone before checking his calendar. Now he must explain what happened honestly.
Join Easy English Learning Podcast for a natural two-host conversation with useful phrases for when someone asks for your time.

🗣️ USEFUL ENGLISH SENTENCES FROM THE EPISODE
“Let me check my schedule first.”
“Can I get back to you?”
“I already have a family commitment.”
“I can help in the morning, but I can't stay all afternoon.”
“I'm sorry I spoke too soon.”
“I'm not available on Saturday afternoon.”
“Sunday morning doesn't work for me. Friday evening does.”
“I can be there at two, but I can't come early.”
“I've taken on too much this weekend.”
“I understand, but I can only help for an hour.”
“I don't want to let my friend down.”
Notice how these sentences give a clear answer while respecting the other person. Daniel does not suddenly refuse every request. He learns to offer help when he truly can, explain his limits when he cannot, and correct a promise before it creates a bigger problem.
🌟 LEARN ENGLISH THROUGH A REALISTIC STORY
Emma notices that Daniel has four reminders for the same afternoon. He tells her that saying yes makes him feel kind and dependable, while saying no makes him feel guilty. But being reliable means checking what you can actually do.
Listen as Daniel calls his friend Mark to explain that he can help with moving boxes in the morning, asks his coworker to send her slides by Friday, and finds a different delivery option for his neighbor. Then his sister calls with one more favor—and Daniel gets another chance to practice an honest answer.
You will hear natural English for answering requests, offering alternatives, changing arrangements, and admitting “I should have checked before saying yes.”
🎯 HOW TO PRACTICE YOUR SPEAKING
First listen: Follow the story. Who asks Daniel for help, and what does each person need?
Second listen: Pause after short expressions such as “Let me check” and “I'm not available.” Repeat them aloud and pay attention to the friendly tone.
Third listen: Imagine a friend asks you to help on a day when you already have plans. Say what you could answer. Try one polite refusal and one honest alternative.
For extra shadowing practice, repeat both Emma's questions and Daniel's replies. You can change “Saturday” to another day, or replace “help with moving” with a favor from your own life.
📌 PERFECT FOR

💡 YOUR COMMENT CHALLENGE
Choose THREE expressions from this episode and write them in the comments. Use at least ONE in your own English sentence. Then answer: What would you say if a friend asked for help when you were already busy?
Example: “I'd like to help, but I'm not available on Saturday. Could we choose another day?”
Say your answer aloud before posting.
