💬 Someone says, “You did a great job!” Do you smile and say thank you—or immediately answer, “It was nothing”? Practice natural English for accepting compliments, responding to praise, and talking about confidence in this B1–B2 English learning podcast with Emma and Daniel.
Emma has just given an important presentation at work. Her manager says it was clear and well organized. Instead of accepting the compliment, Emma says she barely prepared—even though she practiced all weekend! When a friend praises her jacket, Emma changes the subject to its sale price. Why is it so hard for her to receive a kind word without explaining it away?
Follow an original conversation about receiving praise without feeling arrogant, recognizing effort, and sharing credit.

🗣️ NATURAL ENGLISH PHRASES FROM THE CONVERSATION
“Thank you. I worked hard on it.”
“That means a lot coming from you.”
“I appreciate you noticing.”
“I'm glad the main points came across.”
“Thanks. I was nervous, but I'm glad my answer helped.”
“Thanks! It's my favorite color.”
“That's kind of you to say.”
“I'm glad we worked well together.”
“I've been working on that.”
“Thanks. The whole team contributed, and I'm glad it went well.”
Listen to the situations around each expression. A simple “Thank you” is often enough, but you can add a short detail when it feels natural. You can also correct an exaggerated compliment gently without dismissing the person's goodwill.
🌟 THE STORY BEHIND THE ENGLISH
Emma worries that agreeing with praise means claiming to be perfect. Daniel helps her separate those ideas: her manager praised one presentation, not Emma's entire personality. They practice responding to compliments about a presentation, a difficult question, and a favorite jacket. She can also recognize her preparation AND thank Noah for checking the data.
When her manager invites her to present to another team, Emma has a fresh opportunity to respond differently. She asks practical questions about the meeting rather than rejecting the invitation or minimizing her work.
The conversation also makes an important distinction: you do not have to welcome every comment. If a remark feels inappropriate, you can redirect the conversation or set a boundary. Accepting genuine praise doesn't mean agreeing with everything.
💡 HOW TO LEARN ENGLISH WITH THIS PODCAST
First listen: Follow Emma's story. Notice when she rejects praise and how Daniel responds.
Second listen: Pause after a useful phrase. Repeat it aloud. Pay attention to the calm tone and natural rhythm rather than memorizing a long speech.
Third listen: Imagine a friend complimenting your clothes or a manager praising your work. Answer in your own words. Try “Thank you,” then add one honest sentence about your effort or your team.
Adapt these examples to school, work, presentations, and friendships.
🎯 YOUR ENGLISH SPEAKING CHALLENGE
Choose THREE expressions from the episode and write them in the comments. Use at least ONE in your own sentence. Then answer this question: What's a compliment you've found difficult to accept, and how could you respond now?
Example: “My teacher said my presentation was clear. I could say, ‘Thank you. I've been working on that.’”
Say your answer aloud before you post. Practice expressing appreciation naturally.
