Akaza has never eaten a woman and doesn't know why. When Tanjiro notices grief buried in the demon's scent, he refuses to let another memory return too late.
This story follows the fight on the Mugen Train, but instead of dawn arriving too soon, Tanjiro uses what his nose tells him to help Upper Moon Three remember the human he used to be. Hakuji was a boy marked as a thief who found a dojo, a teacher named Keizo, and a sick girl named Koyuki—the girl whose shape became the Compass Needle beneath his feet. The narration walks through how Tanjiro, Rengoku, and even Inosuke keep Akaza present long enough for the blood's curse to break and for Hakuji to face the sun as himself, remembering what he fought for and who he lost.
