Jackson the Chocolate Lab | Week 1 Board & Train | Teaching Place & Building Impulse Control

Meet Jackson the Chocolate Lab! Jackson is kicking off his two-week Board & Train program at Best Paw Forward Dog Training in Perkasie, PA, and we're excited to share his very first training video! Today, Jackson worked on learning the "Place" command, an important foundational skill that helps dogs develop impulse control, learn boundaries, and practice settling in one designated area. Jackson is here working on recall, leave it/drop it, counter surfing, and polite greetings. Teaching place is a great way to begin building the structure and communication he'll need throughout his training program! During today's training session, we focused on: Place Command: Teaching Jackson to go to a designated spot and remain there until released. Attention & Engagement: Encouraging Jackson to focus on his handler and respond to guidance. Impulse Control: Helping Jackson learn to pause and think instead of immediately acting on excitement. Boundaries: Introducing the idea that certain spaces and behaviors have clear expectations. Foundation Obedience: Building the communication skills that will carry over into his other training goals. Why is place training so important for Jackson? Place is one of our favorite skills to teach because it has so many practical uses at home! For Jackson, learning place can help with several of the behaviors his owners want to improve. Whether it's staying out of the kitchen while food is being prepared, remaining calm when guests arrive, or learning to settle instead of constantly seeking attention, place gives him a clear job to focus on. The goal isn't just for Jackson to stay on a bed or platform. We want him to learn how to settle, respect boundaries, and make better choices in everyday situations! Since this is Jackson's first training video, we're starting with the basics and setting him up for success. As he progresses through his two-week Board & Train program, we'll continue building duration, adding distractions, and helping him become more reliable with his commands.
