A Veteran Lookout Was Found on a Trail He'd Already Cleared
A veteran fire lookout named Dale Maddox spent eleven seasons maintaining the same remote trail in Montana’s Bitterroot wilderness. On September 14th, he completed his routine trail clearance, filed his report from the tower, and confirmed everything was open. Nine hours later, a hunter found him unconscious at the bottom of that same trail — a mile and a half past the section he’d already walked, cleared, and signed off on. He had no memory of going back down. His boots were worn through. His arms were covered in tree pitch up to the elbows. And a trail register at the bottom bore his handwriting — timestamped after he’d already returned to the tower.
What followed was an investigation that uncovered impossible boot prints, dead trees producing fresh resin, a timber barricade that appeared and vanished without a trace, and logbook entries written in Dale’s handwriting on days he was never there. The trail he had maintained for over a decade appeared to be maintaining itself — performing his exact routines, replicating his techniques, and signing his initials.
This is Nora Avery’s account of what she found on the Willow Peak connector trail, and why Dale Maddox never went back.
