More than three thousand years ago, an Egyptian pharaoh carved a boast into black granite. He claimed he had wiped out a people called Israel. He was wrong, and the land he wrote about has been fought over, prayed over and argued over ever since. This documentary follows that land from the Canaanite city states to the October 2026 Israeli election. It covers the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, the Assyrian and Babylonian conquests, Persian, Greek and Roman rule, and the revolts that ended in exile. Then come the Byzantine Holy Land, the arrival of Islam and the Dome of the Rock, the Crusades and four centuries of Ottoman rule. The story continues through the birth of Zionism and Palestinian Arab nationalism, the British Mandate, the Holocaust and the 1947 partition vote. From there it moves through the 1948 war, remembered by Israelis as the War of Independence and by Palestinians as the Nakba, and on to 1967, the peace treaties, Oslo, the intifadas, October 7 and the wars that followed. The video gives Israeli and Palestinian experiences side by side, and it explains why Jews, Christians and Muslims all see this small strip of land as sacred. Casualty figures are attributed to the sources that reported them, and recent events are described as they stood at the time of recording. Which moment in this history do you think did the most to shape the conflict we see today, and why? Share your view in the comments, and please keep the discussion respectful.
