The ground exploded with relics from the very first shovel.
Waynos and I had barely started exploring this deserted late-1800s cabin site when relics began coming out of the ground everywhere. Within about 20 minutes, we'd uncovered nearly 80 things—and joked that we might need the truck to get it all out of the woods.
Sometime around 1870–1890, a small cabin once stood at this remote location. Today the land has completely returned to forest, but it's easy to imagine someone clearing a small piece of ground, building a modest dwelling, planting a garden, and quietly living here for a couple of decades.
More than a century later, we're metal detecting and relic hunting the same forgotten place.
As soon as we opened the ground, the evidence was everywhere—old glass bottles, pieces of china, sheet metal, iron farming tools, tobacco tins, a button, hardware, and more relics and artifacts than we could keep track of. There appeared to be an entire collection of old drag harrow parts scattered through the site, along with complete bottles and tools.
But finding things is only part of exploring old places like this.
The nails and window glass helped us identify where the structure once stood, while smaller finds such as baling wire, rivets, and pieces of patch iron showed us another area where the people who lived here probably spent time working. We also explored beyond the main cabin site and discovered another area of activity farther into the woods.
That's what makes deserted places like this so interesting. You have to read the landscape, study where the relics are concentrated, and slowly decode what people were doing here more than a century ago.
An incredible day of metal detecting, relic hunting, and uncovering the history of an abandoned place that has been hidden beneath the New England forest for generations.
