Was I chasing the WRONG Marshall amp? The ‪@marshall‬ JCM800 Modified completely changed the way I think about the legendary JCM800 sound. For years, I was obsessed with chasing the classic Marshall Plexi tone—and I still absolutely love it. But when I played the Marshall 1959 Modified and JCM800 Modified side by side, something unexpected happened: the JCM800 completely fried my noodle! At its heart, this is still the unmistakable sound of a Marshall JCM800 2203: huge, aggressive, dynamic and packed with that legendary British growl. But the Modified Series takes the classic 100-watt valve amp considerably further. The additional switches allow you to reshape the mids, introduce clipping diodes for more overdrive and saturation, and tighten the bass response for faster, more focused high-gain tones. You can retain the raw character of a stock JCM800 or push it into the hot-rodded Marshall territory associated with decades of hard rock and heavy metal. In this video, I explore the stock JCM800 tones, demonstrate each modification, run an additional valve gain stage through the effects loop and show how beautifully this amp responds to an overdrive pedal. Then we finish with the JCM800 Modified in a full production. Players including Zakk Wylde, Jake E. Lee, Kerry King, Slayer, Metallica and Slash helped make cranked and modified Marshall amps an essential part of rock and metal guitar history. After experiencing this particular beast, I finally understand why guitarists have been modifying JCM800 amplifiers for decades.
