This is the Miura Peninsula in Ehime Prefecture. (It is not the famous Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture.)
The Miura Peninsula is located southwest of the center of Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture, and juts out in a northwesterly direction toward the Uwa Sea.

The peninsula is about 15 km long, and its tip curves south like a fish hook.
This is the narrowest point of the Miura Peninsula, and it is called "Dolphins Jumping Over Point" because it is said that even dolphins jumped over it.
Here is now the Hosoki Canal.
Construction of the Hosoki Canal began in 1893, but it was halted many times due to the Sino-Japanese War and the enormous costs, but it was restarted in 1956 and finally completed in 1961.
The Hosoki Canal is the smallest canal in Japan, with a length of 190 m, a width of 20 m, and a depth of 3 m, and is mainly used by small fishing boats.
This is a fishing village called Komobuchi, located at the tip of the Miura Peninsula.
The settlement of Komobuchi developed on the southern side, which does not face the open sea, to avoid the harsh winter seasonal winds.
However, ships heading to Uwajima Port had to take a detour of about 8km and pass through a difficult area with strong tidal currents known as Fubushi Strait.
These problems were solved by building the Hosoki Canal at "Dolphins Jumping Over Point" , the narrowest part of the peninsula.
Today the area is an attractive location for sea bream and oyster farming, as well as for camping and leisure activities.
