The "Sugid Sayaw: Festival of Stories" is Dumaguete City’s contingent theme and cultural concept created specifically to represent the city at the provincial Buglasan Festival.Combining Visayan words—Sugid (meaning "to tell a story"Or "narrative") and Sayaw (meaning "dance")—it literally translates to "Story-Dancing." It brings Dumaguete’s prestigious title as the "City of Literature" directly onto the festival stage through choreography, music, and theatrical movement. 1. Dumaguete as the UNESCO Creative City of Literature To understand Sugid Sayaw, one must look at Dumaguete’s deep literary tradition: Silliman University National Writers Workshop (SUNWW): Established in 1962 by National Artist Edith L. Tiempo and Edilberto K. Tiempo, it is the oldest creative writing workshop in Asia, nurturing generations of Filipino writers. UNESCO Designation: Dumaguete was officially designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, honoring its rich community of poets, novelists, essayists, and storytellers. City of Stories: The city hosts major literary gatherings, such as the Dumaguete Literary Festival (Duma LitFest) and the 6200 Book Festival. 2. Core Concept of Sugid Sayaw Unlike typical street dances that focus solely on historical re-enactments or agricultural harvests, Sugid Sayaw translates written and oral literature into visual movement: Dance as Narrative: Choreography is crafted as "chapters" or short stories. Each sequence tells a local tale—ranging from folklore, sea legends along the Rizal Boulevard, and stories of gentle hospitality, to tributes to local literary works. Rhythmic Storytelling: Percussion and chants act as a rhythmic voice, elevating the performance from traditional street dancing into a living storybook. Symbolic Props & Costumes: Performers feature artistic motifs inspired by books, parchment scrolls, quill pens, and classic scenes from Dumaguete’s history and creative spirit. 3. Role in the Buglasan Festival When towns across Negros Oriental compete in the Buglasan Festival of Festivals Street Dance & Showdown, Dumaguete City enters under the Sugid Sayaw banner. Led frequently by young artists, students, and marching bands from institutions like Dumaguete City National High School (DCNHS) and local colleges, the contingent showcases how Dumaguete stands out not just for physical beauty, but as the literary and intellectual heart of the province.
