"Srita Kamala" is the opening ashtapadi of the Gitagovinda, serving as a mangalacharana. In this hymn, Jayadeva praises Lord Krishna as the divine consort of Lakshmi, the slayer of the demon Mura, and the eternal protector of the world. The verses highlight Krishna’s supreme beauty, adorned with ornaments like kundala, and his cosmic roles as both the lover and the divine. This ashtapadi sets a devotional tone for the rest of the Gitagobinda, inviting the listener into a sacred space of bhakti for the Lord. I performed this piece, in Jati Taal, choreographed by Padma Vibhusan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, in a programme when I was around 11 years old, under the supreme guidance of Guru Smt. Kasturi Pattnaik. I must be blessed by Almighty and my Guru that I could perform this complex and divine piece on stage at an early age. My heart felt Gratitude.
