Everyone is fighting about closed-source AI versus open-source AI, but that fight is only a couple tiers of the real story. In 2024 a paper in Nature proved that when AI trains on its own output it degrades with every generation, and once it starts feeding on itself the collapse cannot be stopped. Now the big models are scraping an internet that is mostly AI talking to itself. The Habsburgs spent two hundred years showing us exactly how that ends. In this walk I get into the false dichotomy, the cathedral experiment, what the data centers and the surveillance grid are really for, and why the models are already getting worse.
