The Prison and the Providence | Genesis 40:1–23 | July 12, 2026
From the Pit to the Palace
The Journey of Joseph
Sermon by Rev. Larry Davis | Second Baptist Church Amarillo, TX
Waiting can be one of the hardest parts of trusting God.
Joseph had already endured betrayal, slavery, false accusation, and imprisonment. Yet even inside the prison, God was still working through people, circumstances, and moments Joseph could not fully understand.
Genesis 40 introduces two prisoners whose dreams become part of Joseph's journey. Joseph recognizes that interpretation belongs to God, and he faithfully uses the wisdom God has given him.
So Joseph said to them, Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please.
Genesis 40:8b NKJV
This passage shows us the prisoners, the perception Joseph demonstrated, and the painful postponement that followed.
Joseph correctly interpreted both dreams. Everything happened exactly as he had said. Yet when the chief butler was restored to his position, Joseph was forgotten.
Sometimes we obey God, serve faithfully, help others, and still find ourselves waiting.
Postponement does not mean abandonment.
Joseph may have been forgotten by a man, but he had not been forgotten by God. Providence was still moving quietly behind the scenes, preparing the right moment for the next chapter.
God's timing is not always our timing, but His timing is never without purpose.
The prison was still part of the journey to the palace.
Join us as we continue studying the life of Joseph and learning how to recognize God's providence even in seasons of waiting, disappointment, and unanswered questions.
