What keeps a corridor usable when there is a fire on one floor of the building? In most fires the danger is the smoke.
This video explains the corridor smoke purge system one step at a time: what it is for, how it works, and how it is sized.
In this video:
Why we extract high and bring make-up air in low, and keep make-up below the exhaust
Corridor volume: full height from floor to slab soffit, not to the false ceiling
Air change rate: 6 per hour minimum in the UAE code; NFPA 92 sets no corridor rate
Make-up air: at least 85 % of the extract (UAE), 85 to 95 % (NFPA 92)
Damper leakage from the other floors
Grille rules: 15 m spacing, extract high, 6 m from exits, make-up air below 5 m/s
Fans rated 400 °C for 2 hours, emergency power, motorised smoke dampers, automatic start within 30 seconds
References: UAE Fire and Life Safety Code 2018 (Chapter 10) and NFPA 92. Requirements differ by country and project; always confirm them with your local authority.
