After France surrendered in June 1940, Nazi Germany stood across the English Channel from Britain. Hitler ordered preparations for an invasion known as Operation Sea Lion. But defeating France on land and invading Britain across the sea were two completely different military challenges. This documentary explores the real weaknesses behind Sea Lion: Germany’s limited naval strength, the Royal Navy’s superiority, the reliance on converted river barges, the difficulty of sustaining an army across the Channel, and the Luftwaffe’s failure to eliminate RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain. Even a successful landing would have been only the beginning. German troops needed protected sea routes, reliable supplies, heavy equipment, and captured ports while British aircraft and warships threatened the invasion fleet. Operation Sea Lion was postponed and never executed. The invasion failed to become feasible because Germany could not secure the air and sea conditions required to carry it out.
