Living on Christmas Island, the remote Australian territory in the Indian Ocean where roads close every year for the red crab migration. A 4K travel documentary about life on Christmas Island today.
Around 1,700 people live on Christmas Island. Every wet season, more than 100 million red crabs leave the rainforest and march to the sea, and the whole island stops to let them pass.
This is Christmas Island, closer to Indonesia than to mainland Australia, and one of the most isolated communities the country has. We make the journey there, land on a runway cut into the jungle plateau, and drop down to Flying Fish Cove, the island's only real settlement. We follow the great red crab migration, the road closures, the crab bridges and underpasses built just for them. Then we go back in time: the island named on Christmas Day 1643, the phosphate rush that built a town, and the Chinese and Malay workers whose families still shape the island today.
You'll also see daily life between the temples, mosques and mine, the giant robber crabs, the threat of yellow crazy ants, and why a community this small depends on one mine and one flight to survive.
