🏡 Eleven cheap, old-fashioned house rules my mother Ada kept in a farmhouse with no running water — and why her home never once smelled shut up or sour.
I'm Verna Prewitt, seventy-eight years old, raised in the Arkansas Ozarks. I've lived alone and kept this house by myself since my husband Clyde passed in 2009. Nobody ever sits you down and teaches you these things. Your own nose stops telling you the truth about your own house, and that happens to every one of us — it isn't weakness and it isn't age.
In this one I go through all eleven, counted up, with the best saved for last:
🪟 Rule 1 — ten minutes of open window, even in January
🛏️ Rule 2 — why a bed made warm is a bed made damp
🧺 Rule 3 — the one cloth in your kitchen causing the whole smell
🫧 Rule 5 — where the sink smell actually lives
🕯️ Rule 6 — the thing on your table that hides it and can burn your house down
🍞 Rule 11 — the real reason a house starts to smell old
⚠️ A few safety notes I say plain in the video: never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar or any other cleaner. One cleaner at a time, with a window open. Never leave a candle burning in an empty room or overnight. And a large patch of mold is a job for a professional, not for you and a sponge.
💬 Tell me in the comments which one of these your own mother or grandmother kept without ever calling it a rule. Give me her name and what part of the country she kept house in. I read every one.
