Buck Cove Mountain Trail - AMAZING Jurassic (Acadia National) Park Hike on Schoodic Peninsula - EPIC

*BUCK COVE MOUNTAIN TRAIL Video Guide* One of the newest trails in Acadia National Park is also one of the longest & best. The trail winds its way through forest, over Buck Cove Mountain, and into a scene that could be easily mistaken for something found in the Jurassic era with large ferns & signs warning of aggressive nature. If a picture is worth 1000 words...what's a video worth? *KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE TRAIL* see the Terrain, Trailheads, Views, and Intersecting Trails... NATURE!!! Beginning atop Schoodic Head, BUCK COVE MOUNTAIN TRAIL heads north over the glacially scored granite of the summit area with some great views before dropping into the forest. The initial descent has some uneven footing, then levelling out onto forested trails. After a bit, as the trail begins to ascend Buck Cove Mtn, with wild blueberries alongside the trail & (when I did it) warning signs about aggressive Spruce Grouse, sometimes encountered on the trail. As the climb slowly winds its way up toward the small summit, bog boards & granite rises are negotiated. From the summit, a gentle descent has roots & glacial erratics as it descends to sections of bog boards & the crossing of Mountain Brook. Arriving at the 1st of 4 bike path crossings, the trail rises once more. A plateau is reached where granite slabs alternate with dirt paths through fields of large ferns, blueberry bushes, & lichens bordering the path. Here feels unlike anywhere else in Acadia, and more like Jurassic Park than Maine. Crossing the 2nd bike path the trailside runs along ledges to a large granite wall (because why wouldn't it?). After the fern section, this may not be remembered as vividly, but is an incredible sight. Continuing, previously tread terrain types alternate as if to remind a hiker of the challenges just faced. It crossed the bike path two more times - fatigue may make a hiker inclined to bail here but that lengthens the distance as the end at Schoodic Woods is near. The end is perhaps anticlimactic as the paved roads of Schoodic Woods carry the hiker back to the Visitor Center and civilization after this dynamic journey. I hope my efforts make your watching experience AND your next visit to ACADIA NATIONAL PARK ... wicked awesome! FRIENDLY REMINDER: no matter the difficulty, hiking has risks... HAVE A PLAN... the best times are had when planned properly. Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia... your hiking plan can include them as contingencies. Injuries can happen, let others know your planned route and timeframe... cell service is spotty in Acadia National Park. Remember: know your limits so you can push them, and DEFINITELY REMEMBER: what goes up must come down which includes you...
