Why This American Theme Park has Christmas Everyday
Long before Christmas-themed attractions became a major part of American entertainment, a small town in Indiana attempted something almost unbelievable — a permanent Christmas theme park.
Opened in 1946 in Santa Claus, Indiana, Santa Claus Land was the brainchild of Louis J. Koch, who wanted to create a place where children could experience Christmas throughout the year. What began as a modest attraction eventually grew into a much larger amusement destination, complete with Santa Claus, holiday-themed attractions, rides, and Christmas imagery unlike anything most Americans had ever seen.
Over the years, Santa Claus Land continued to evolve and eventually became part of the attraction now known as Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari. But the original Santa Claus Land was very different from the modern park — and its unusual beginnings are largely forgotten.
In this video, we explore the incredible rise of Santa Claus Land, why someone decided to build a Christmas theme park in Indiana, how this strange idea became a successful attraction, and how the original park transformed into something much bigger.
This is the story of America’s original Christmas theme park and the unlikely Indiana attraction that helped create a whole new kind of amusement park.
