A tense courtroom appearance unfolded Wednesday in the Vinton County “House of Horrors” case as Elizabeth Siders faced a judge following a request for a competency evaluation.
Siders is one of four family members facing at least 16 counts of child endangerment. Investigators allege that 16 children living at the family’s Hamden home had not attended school and were unable to read or write. Authorities also reported that some of the children were found in critical condition inside a small 12-by-12-foot room on June 30.
During Wednesday’s hearing, Siders pleaded not guilty to all charges, while her bond was increased from $250,000 to $500,000.
The case also involves a separate sex-crime investigation in which Siders and her husband, Gary Siders Jr., have been indicted. Siders entered not-guilty pleas to those charges as well.
This video breaks down what happened in court, the competency evaluation, the increased bond, and the serious legal questions now surrounding the case.
Important: The allegations discussed in this video are accusations. The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
