Netherworlds (released on October 16, 2026, via Century Media Records) is the tenth studio album by the Finnish melodic death metal band Insomnium. It is their first full-length release featuring a solidified three-guitarist lineup following the departure of Jani Liimatainen, and it arrives the year before the band’s 30th anniversary (having been founded in 1997). Following the darker and heavier Anno 1696 (2023), this record consciously revisits the classic Nordic melancholy found in works such as Shadows of the Dying Sun (2014) and Heart Like a Grave (2019). It retains the band’s unmistakable identity—heavy death metal riffs blended with elegant melodies, cinematic atmospheres, and deep introspection—while incorporating more harmonic layers, thanks to the three-guitar setup, along with a greater presence of clean vocals. The result is an album that feels both familiar and refreshed, described by many critics as a high point in the band’s career. The sound is quintessential Finnish melodic death metal: sharp, melodic riffs, acoustic and atmospheric passages, emotional choruses, and a cold, nocturnal ambiance. The album features faster, more direct tracks (such as “Gleam in the Black”) alongside contemplative, progressive epics. The production—handled by Miiro Varjus (recorded at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki), with mixing and mastering by Jens Bogren and Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios (Sweden)—delivers a vast, dynamic, and crystal-clear sound that highlights both the band’s aggression and its melodic beauty. The lyrics explore recurring themes for the band: mortality, memory, loss, the fleeting nature of life, mysterious love, and the journey through the “netherworlds.” “Gleam in the Black,” for instance, tells a dark and enigmatic love story, evoking the sensation of wandering through nocturnal woods in search of something lost—something that can only be reached in dreams. Available as a standard CD, a deluxe 2CD artbook, various vinyl editions (black, pearl blue, band-shop exclusives, etc.), and in digital format. Pre-release singles included “Shadowlife” and “Gleam in the Black” (accompanied by a music video). The band has kicked off a launch tour in Finland and is set to join Amorphis on their European tour in 2027. In short, Netherworlds is a mature and consistent album that reaffirms Insomnium’s mastery of melancholic melodic death metal: dark, beautiful, liminal, and deeply emotional. Recent reviews have praised it as potentially one of the best works of their career—or, at the very least, fully in line with the high standard the band has maintained for nearly three decades.
