An original worship song for when life feels like it is flooding and you can't get your head above it. A hard season, a long night, anxious hope. You are not going under alone. ▶ Scripture behind this song (direct quote, KJV): "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee." (Isaiah 43:2, KJV) The song draws on Isaiah 43:1-3. In that passage God speaks His promise to His people: fear not, I have redeemed you, I have called you by name, you are mine, I am with you in the water and the fire. In the song it is sung personally, and to Jesus, as a Christian reading of that promise. ▶ About the lyrics: The lyrics are original and are a paraphrase inspired by Isaiah 43:1-3. They are not a direct quotation of Scripture. The scenes (the interstate at night, the hospital waiting room), the prayer to the Holy Spirit and the line "the morning finds me on the other side" are the song's own. ▶ Lyrics: The river will not take me under, You are with me in the water, Jesus. The river will not take me under, You are with me in the water. Wipers on high on the interstate at night, Hazard lights blinking in the slow right lane, Phone face down with a message I can't answer, Counting mile markers just to stay awake. Then I hear the Lord who made me, Don't be afraid, I bought you back, I called your name, and you are mine, I won't let go of what I have. The river will not take me under, You are with me in the water, Jesus. The river will not take me under, You are with me in the water. Hospital coffee and a plastic chair, A form on a clipboard I can't read through tears, The heat of it rising like a kitchen fire, But the flame won't catch, and God, You're standing here. You are the Lord, You are my God, The Holy One who came to save, You called my name, and I am Yours, You won't let go, You never change. The river will not take me under, You are with me in the water, Jesus. The river will not take me under, You are with me in the water. When I walk through the fire, I won't be burned, When the flood comes high, I won't be drowned, Holy Spirit, keep my head above it, Jesus, You are the solid ground. The river will not take me under, You are with me in the water, Jesus. The river will not take me under, You are with me in the water, And the morning finds me on the other side. You are with me in the water, Jesus. ▶ Credits: Lyrics: One Passage (original).
