🇮🇱 Walks Through Israel. Ancient Cemeteries in Haifa

Haifa hides many historical treasures, one of which are its ancient cemeteries. We begin our journey at the German cemetery, established in the late 19th century. Here you can see two groups of graves. The older ones, dating back to the early 1800s, belong to the first Templer settlers. Closer to the road lie the soldiers' graves from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, likely connected to the British Army during World War I and the liberation of Haifa under General Allenby's command. Adjacent to the German cemetery is the Indian cemetery, where soldiers of the Indian Expeditionary Force who fought on behalf of the British Empire rest. This site is notable for its monument dedicated to fallen warriors and trees imported from India, creating a unique atmosphere. Finally, we visit the old Jewish cemetery, founded in the 1860s. It became the final resting place for members of Eastern Jewish communities such as those from Algeria, Turkey, and Morocco. Later, it also housed Ashkenazi Jews, including prominent city residents like the family of P. Rutenberg, founder of the Palestine Electric Company, and architect G. Wilbushevich. A special place belongs to Rabbi Avdimi, a Jewish sage from the 2nd–3rd centuries whose tomb lies beneath a blue dome, symbolizing a spiritual connection across time. His grave marks the earliest mention of Haifa.
