The Dark Story of Woolworth's: He Paid CASH for the Tallest Tower and Never SIGNED His Will On April 24, 1913, President Woodrow Wilson pressed a button in Washington, and eighty thousand bulbs lit up the tallest building in the world. Frank Woolworth had paid for it in cash, every cent of it, with money made five and ten cents at a time. That was the story America received. But the family inside that story was coming apart while the tower rose. A daughter died in a suite at the Plaza Hotel, and her death certificate says one thing while her child's biographer says another. A husband went to court about the wife who had once nursed him back to health. A granddaughter became the richest girl in America and the name striking shop girls sang about. And in the last weeks of his life, in a marble house on Long Island, a new will was drawn up and left on the table.
