The Dark Story of the Plaza Hotel: A PALACE on Fifth Avenue Put Up for Sale From a PRISON Officially, the Plaza is the palace of Fifth Avenue. The Beatles slept there on their first night in America. Truman Capote threw the party of the century in its ballroom. A little girl named Eloise ran its halls in a storybook. But the Plaza has a habit it does not advertise. It breaks the people who own it. Six days before the crash of 1929, the man who built it was pulled out of a bathtub on the eighteenth floor. In 1988, a buyer told all of New York, in a full-page newspaper letter, that he had knowingly made a deal that was not economic. In 2014, an owner tried to sell the hotel from a conference room inside a prison in New Delhi. And the builder's name is missing from the hotel's own official timeline. It survives in only one place.
