Neap escape, bungee helm, Cellars beach

With nearly a week of low neap tides approaching, I had a choice- stay 'neaped' on the drying mooring or get out on the boat until the following week. I opted for the latter, being keen to get some time aboard after months of mostly grim weather. I explain my 'bungee helm' as a means of securing the tiller to hold a course temporarily. It allows me freedom to leave the helm and deal with other boat tasks. Once set the boat holds it's course well. Small course adjustments can still be made too. This method is not a replacement for wind vane steering or the electronic autohelms that actively steer to hold a course, but it is silent, uses no power and is extremely useful. On longer trips the course steered just needs supervision and a look out kept. Other boats may not hold course as well as the double canoe. I had a similar tiller damper on my outrigged sailing canoe and that also worked great. In this episode I explore Cellars beach on the Percuil River.
