When The Sabbath Comes

WHEN THE SABBATH COMES “When the Sabbath Comes” is a song about Jesus, His followers, and the longing of God’s people for the sacred rest of the seventh-day Sabbath. At Creation, God blessed and sanctified the seventh day (Genesis 2:1–3). At Sinai He said, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8–11). Jesus Himself kept the Sabbath and declared, “The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath” (Mark 2:27–28; Luke 4:16). Even as Jesus rested in the tomb, His followers “rested the sabbath day according to the commandment” (Luke 23:54–56). Scripture also points beyond our present world to the New Earth, where God’s redeemed people will worship before Him “from one sabbath to another” (Isaiah 66:22–23). Ellen G. White beautifully connected the Sabbath with knowing our Creator: “The Sabbath calls our thoughts to nature, and brings us into communion with the Creator.” — The Desire of Ages, p. 281. The Sabbath is therefore more than stopping our work. It points us to Jesus—our Creator, Redeemer, Lord of the Sabbath, and the One in whom we find true rest.
